Viral Hepatitis and Mitochondrial Dynamics will be highlighted by Pr Aleem Siddiqui

Aleem SiddiquiPr Aleem Siddiqui, from Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA, will highlight the relation between Viral Hepatitis and Mitochondrial Dynamics during Targeting Mitochondria World Congress 2014.

Mitochondrial injury and oxidative stress are prominent features of chronic hepatitis associated with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. HBV/HCV-induced oxidative stress leads to dysfunctional mitochondria, which are toxic and can cause damage to adjacent mitochondria and promote cell death. Hence a rapid turnover of the damaged mitochondria is crucial for survival of hepatitis virus-infected cells and for maintenance of persistent infection in humans. The removal of dysfunctional mitochondria is orchestrated by asymmetric mitochondrial fission to eliminate the damaged mitochondria by subsequent mitophagy. Aberrant mitochondrial dynamics induced by HBV/HCV infections attenuates apoptosis of infected hepatocytes and contributes to the persistent viral infection.
